Trinity Guild were hit with availability and Injury issues leading into clash with relegated from Midland 4 West South last season Atherstone at Rowley Road
Many key first team players were unavailable to face Coach Richard Jenkins former team Atherstone RFC at home, Including 1st XV Captain Macauley Jones who broke his arm the night prior to the game. Vice Captain Dave Jones lead the Guild on the field. Atherstone started with a strong forward pack and used it a lot during the game. Atherstone's forward dominance lead to them taking the lead after a rolling maul Atherstone spinned the ball to the backs and after a switch move in midfield Atherstone fullback crossed the line making the score Atherstone 5-0 Guild. The try was successfully converted by Atherstones inside centre who had a very good game with the boot for the visitors. 5 minutes later another rollling maul lead to a penalty for Atherstone which was clinically dispatched by the 12 to give the visitors a 10-0 lead after 20 minutes. After a tough 20 minutes guild started to get there hands on the ball and play some good rugby, a chip over the Atherstone back line by Dave Jones allowed Pete Askew to collect the ball and out pace the Atherstone back 3 to score for the Guild. The try was successfully converted by Guild full back Ethan Fox. At half time the score was 10-7 to the visitors.
The second half started very similar to the first half with Atherstone slowing down any Guild momentum by rolling mauls and a forward dominated game preventing Guild to attack. There was nothing to note about the first 5 minutes of the second half. Atherstones constant forward game was frustrating Guild a lot, but great play in the loose from experienced back row Chris Hughes, who had a very good game disrupting Atherstones forwards, allowed Guild to turn over the ball and release the backs. Quickly spinning the ball wide gave Ethan Fox a one on one with the Atherstone wing, who he out paced and beat the covering full back to score for Guild and give them the lead for the first time within the fixture. Fox converted his own try to give a 14-10 lead after 47 minutes. Atherstone once again took every advantage to slow Guilds momentum and crashed through Guilds forwards and created 2 penalties for themselves both successful off the inside centres boot, giving the visitors a 16-14 lead. A encounter within a ruck caused number 8 Chris Hughes to be substituted with a bad looking eye injury, meaning Guild needed to reshuffle as he was replaced by loose head prop Neil Crowther. 40 seconds after being on the pitch Crowther was sin binned for foul play within a ruck. Whilst Crowther was off the pitch Atherstones forward dominance allowed them to score another try from the forwards with a lot of pick and go attacks onto the Guilds fringes. The score stood at Atherstone 23-14 Guild with 15 minutes to play. With 10 minutes to play Guild got the wind beneath there sails and started to play some good running rugby putting Atherstones defence under pressure. After another chip over the Atherstone backline allowed Ethan Fox to collect the loose ball and cross the try line for his 2nd try of the game and his 3rd league try in 2 games. Fox converted the try and brought the score back to 23-21. Guild were pushing for the victory when Atherstone turned the ball over and kicked up field. Fox covered the ball and was tackled inside Guilds 22. But unfortunately an Atherstone knee/foot made contact with Fox's head and caused a significant head injury that caused the referee to have to stop the game and get an ambulance for the Guild full back. The full time whistle was blown on the 76th minute and the result stood.
Fullback Ethan Fox was taken to hospital with his head injury. Thankfully Ethan wasn't seriously injured and will be able to return for the Guild within a couple of weeks after recovery.
Coaches Comments - We played really good rugby today boys. When we had possession we were clinical and scored some very nice tries. We pushed a strong side in this league to there limits and deserved to win the game on our second half performance. Keep up the hard work Guild and the wins you deserve will come.
