Match report vs Coventrian’s
By Paul Beasley
A much changed and experimental Guild side travelled to face Nick Cameron’s Coventrian’s team on a wet and windy day.
A tight first half seen both teams get rid of the cobwebs from over pre season and was largely uneventful, until Coventrian’s forward crashed over guild line making it 5-0 before the end of the first quarter. In the 2nd Quarter Guild responded by keeping the ball tight and going through some phases. After tightening the scrum from the 1st quarter, the Guild were able to set a platform for scrum half James Askew to cross the whitewash in the corner to bring the game level at 5-5. Unfortunately for Guild, Coventrian's score directly from kick off as miscommunication in the Guild ranks allowed Coventrian’s to collect their kick and cross the line.
The second half started with completely different squads taking the field. Guild were hit with injuries allowing Coventrian’s to get a strong grip on the game and allowed them to score 3 unanswered tries in the 3rd Quarter. Going into the 4th quarter, Coventrian’s were leading 27-5. The Guild pushed for a strong finish and held out on their line on a few occasions to keep the score the same. As Guilds strength in defence increased their confidence, they started to play some good creative rugby resulting in Pete Askew crossing the line for the final score of the contest.
Rich Jenkins was very impressed with the teams performance today. We pushed a strong organised side to their limits and when we had chances to play our game we took full advantage of it. Can't wait until the Bedworth game next week to continue our progress.
